Stairs need to conform to the building regulations with risers no more than 220mm high and treads no less than 220mm but must not be more than 42 deg. So a stair with risers of 220mm would need treads a minimum of 247mm wide. There needs to be 2 metre head room all the way up the stairs including a landing at the top of the stairs. If the stairs are going above existing stairs there needs to be the same headroom below the new stairs.
